Back in 2011, the Discovery Channel sent a film crew to Haws to record a segment for their How It’s Made documentary television series on the making of a Drinking Fountain. The episode featured the Haws concrete pedestal Drinking Fountain, model 3060, and several talented Haws employees. The segment on Haws Drinking Fountains aired on the Science/Discovery Channel in the US on Thursday, November 15th 2012.
Luther Haws was a self-employed master plumber, as well as a sanitation inspector, for the city of Berkeley, California. In 1906, while on his rounds at a public school, Luther noticed children drinking from a shared tin cup. This unsanitary though typical arrangement inspired the inventor in him. Using available parts, Luther Haws assembled the world’s first drinking faucet.
The Haws concrete drinking pedestal drinking fountain is constructed and assembled onsite at Haws’ Sparks facility. The circular concrete pedestal includes a polished stainless steel basin, push-button operation, and vandal-resistant bubbler.
