BEYOND PROVIDING CLEAN, HYGIENIC OPTIONS FOR water indoors and out, electric water coolers and water bottle fillers boast many features that optimize their useful lifespan and ongoing maintenance. Here are a few of the features facilities managers should inquire about when considering new hydration options.
Robust construction. K–12 and college students can rough-handle equipment, no matter where it’s located. Bottle fillers that rely on sensitive electronic sensors should house the most sensitive components within strong housing that can withstand all the challenges kids may throw its way.
Vandal-resistance. Similar to robust sensor housing, outdoor water coolers in particular should provide vandal-resistance in the form of galvanized frames and steel cabinets, which also protect against weatherization and other wear.
Easy to clean. Any minimal risk of public shared water sources can be traced to contamination from poor cleaning or maintenance of old water infrastructure, according to a report from the Pacific Institute. Stainless steel construction requires minimal maintenance and is lower cost than other materials. Bottle fillers offer an even more sanitary way to fill up with hands-free options and filtration that removes lead and other water contaminants.
Options for renovations. Electric water coolers and bottle fillers can replace older water fountains on the wall in older buildings with very large installation rough-ins. Look for new products that offer versatility for replacing older products, to securely and easily replace without requiring unsightly work-arounds.
WHAT SHOULD BE CLEANED?
- Units run more efficiently when the condenser is kept clean and generally dust-free.
- Lime build-up in regions with hard water can be removed with some vinegar and water periodically.
- Where drains are handling more than just water, particularly in school settings where children may dump other substances, easy removal of components — so that they can be cleaned with mild soap — keeps units fresh.
- Filters must withstand heavy use in water bottle fillers, and should last through 3,000 gallons or one year, whichever comes first, before requiring a change.
Proper placement and care of water coolers and bottle fillers ensures students can enjoy access to clean water wherever and whenever they need it most.
