Early Lessons in Independence
Bill’s very first job was selling men’s clothing at a department store.
“If anything, it taught me how to work on my own, making my own decisions. I was 18 at the time, and it was the only other job I have had in my career.”
From Chicago to Reno: A Fortunate First Day
“I went to an employment agency my first full day in Reno. They immediately sent me for my first potential job interview with Haws. They hired me on the spot.”
When Bill Epker arrived in Reno from Chicago, he wasted no time. That chance encounter set the stage for a remarkable career.
Why Haws—and Why He Stayed
What made Bill stay at Haws for so many years?
“The family-owned atmosphere… and having jobs of responsibility within the first four months.”
When a group of product managers and supervisors went on strike, Haws let most of them go, opening up new opportunities.
“This hands-on ability to learn the subtleties of managing and working with people made my job interesting every day.”
Longevity and Leadership
When asked about his proudest accomplishment, Bill points to his longevity.
“Sure, I am going to wonder what if I had a number of jobs over my career instead of one, but now that I am calling it quits, I believe I made the right choice.”
A turning point came early:
“Assuming a role of responsibility at age 19 kept me from realizing that production work would not be the career I wanted.”
Lessons Learned and Humbling Moments
Bill is candid about the challenges he faced:
“Definitely, the people aspect. There were many a day I made the wrong choice when approaching someone concerning their performance. I was humbled often due to poor judgement.”
Favorite Memories and Influences
Among his favorite memories are the “great Christmas gatherings… which included ownership over the years, brought everyone closer together.”
He credits Dan Norton, who became plant manager in 1979, as a major influence:
“He had confidence in me to lead the production group.”
A Toast to Good Times
Asked about the funniest or most unexpected moment, Bill recalls:
Advice for the Next Generation
Bill’s advice for newcomers:
“Look to grow in our company. It makes for a more rewarding experience.”
If he could give his younger self advice?
“Stay in Production. Don’t be fed to the wolfs in Marketing as I was😜.”
Industry Changes and Looking Forward
Reflecting on industry changes, Bill notes:
“The lead-free, hands-free, and bottle filling technology has totally changed the industry.”
As for retirement, he admits:
“It is hard to imagine doing things I look forward to doing without thinking ‘what do I need to do at work first.’ I will have to spend some time after Haws thinking about what now excites me.”
What’s Next? Golf and Adventure!
Bill looks forward to more time on the golf course (“who saw that one coming😜”) and has a trip to Europe on his bucket list.
